Asking questions is a great way to get an idea of what you could purchase for them. Some questions you could ask them before the upcoming event could be:

They are having a buy one get one 50% off sale, right then you know that you can buy one item at regular price for however much it's listed for and still have enough money left over to either purchase a second item or save the rest of for another event. Budgeting helps you not to overthink or over shop. It is always good to have an idea of how much money you would like to spend, that way shopping is a breeze for you.
